NO 5: Last, but not least, FAST.
Fasting is a must in every faithful Christ follower’s life. Whether it be one day a week or a certain period of time every year, you have to ask the lord to give you the courage to undergo fasting.
Although fasting involves abstaining from food/water, or food only, or from meat for a certain period of time, the main purpose of fasting is to do tip number 4. Humble yourselves before the lord.
It’s that day or days, you try to give yourself as a whole for the lord, pray and wait in his presence.
Although others have fasted/prayed while still focusing on other activities like going to work and so on, if you can fast for even once a month for a whole day and do nothing but pray/meditate on his word, trust me, you will start seeing the power of god working in your life in every corner of your life.
“And when you fast, do not look gloomy, like the hypocrites, for they disfigure their faces that their fasting may be seen by others. Truly, i say unto you, they have received their reward. But when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, that your fasting may not be seen by others but by your father who is in secret. And your father who sees in secret will reward you.” (Matthew 6:16-18)
That passage from Matthew chapter 6, has all that you know about the importance of fasting and how to do it.
3 points taken from it are:
- “When you fast”- fasting for us Christians is not an option, but a commandment.
- “Anoint and wash your face”- Keep your face looking fresh like how you’d look on every other day.
- Do it in secret- Apart from your spouse or a close family member (only if the need arises), keep your fast a secret from everyone so you will get your reward from the lord who sees it being done in secret.
And remember, nobody is perfect and can never be so. But we have all been invited to run this race of good faith, and he has promised to help us in every step of the way. So cling onto him and go for it.
Praise the lord.
